About GRE

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardised admission test for graduate schools and business schools. A majority of schools will require that students score at least 450 to 500 on each of the GRE tests before they will be granted admission into a Master’s degree program.

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a multiple-choice, standardized test conducted by ETS. Universities use the GRE exam scores of applicants to gauge their preparedness for graduate programs. The GRE exam measures your command of basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis as well as college-level vocabulary. More importantly, it measures your ability to analyze and evaluate written material, think critically, and solve problems.

GRE exam syllabus

You will receive three scores on the GRE:

  1. Analytical Writing
The GRE analytical writing measure consists of two writing essays which are timed separately.  You will write these two essays first when taking the GRE, before any quantitative or verbal sections.  The two tasks are :
  1. Analyze an Issue
Here you will be given an opinion on a topic of general interest. Once you’ve understood the pros and cons of the opinion, things become easy. All you have to do is support your argument well.

             2. Analyze an Issue

Here, you will have to look at the two sides of an argument. Then, you will have to a side and strengthen your argument accordingly.

2.Verbal Reasoning

In each GRE Verbal section, questions are broken down into Text Completion, Sentence Equivalence, and Reading Comprehension question types. There are approximately 20 questions to complete in 30 minutes, giving you between 1 and 4 minutes per question, depending on the type. Each Verbal section will start with Text Completions, then you will see a block of 4–5 Reading Comprehension questions, then the block of Sentence Equivalence questions, and you will finish up with a second block of Reading Comprehension.

3. Quantitative Reasoning

This section analyzes your problem-solving skills and basic mathematical concepts such as Algebra, Geometry, Data analysis, etc.

The 20 questions in each section will be an assortment of Quantitative Comparison, Problem Solving, and Data Interpretation items, and you’ll have between 1.5 and 2 minutes to answer each question. However, the question types are not distributed equally.

GRE Test Scores

The importance of your GRE score varies depending on the institution and degree program. Some programs may consider your test score to be a critical determinant for your admission while others may only consider it a formality.

The average GRE scores ares

  1. Verbal and Quantitative sections – 150-155 (Range 130-170)
  2. Analytical section – 3.5 (Range 0-6)
